How to Create Sustainable Landscapes

Know your site

The design of your garden should emerge from an understanding of the natural processes and dynamics unique to your site.

Right plant, right place

Choose plants that are adapted to local ecosystems and microclimates. Group plants with similar needs for sunlight, soil, and water. By choosing plants that are adapted to the conditions of your site, you can turn problems into assets.

Work with nature on your site

Let nature be your guide. Encourage wildlife by

imitating natural plantings with a diversity of plants,

 water, and shelter.

Nurture your soil

Healthy soil depends upon the existence of a healthy population of soil organisms. Compost imitates natural processes of soil replenishment.

Learn from your landscape

Don't just plant and walk away. Keep ahead of potential problems by monitoring your garden regularly. Accept that change is part of natural systems. A diverse and healthy garden will change throughout the year and over time, but will always offer you the satisfaction of a beautiful, sustainable landscape.

Did you know?

Grass clippings left on the lawn supply at least 1/4 of your lawn's requirements for nitrogen

Brown grass in the summer is a sign of dormancy. Your grass isn't dead, it's just resting!

Clover is actually good for your lawn since it helps make atmospheric nitrogen available.
