Right plant, right place - a basic truth about gardening: if you work with your site conditions and choose plants that will thrive in them, you will spend less time fussing over their health, and they will do most of the "work" for you. But, how to identify these ‘easy’ plants and know where they will thrive? This course will take place over an entire growing season (spring, summer, fall). Using the 1.5 acres of the Earthwise Demonstration Garden as a learning tool, students will observe plants in various stages of growth and development, learn how to determine optimal growing conditions based on plant characteristics, and how to use plants to create healthy and robust garden ecosystems. At the end of fourteen sessions, students will be familiar with over 100 plants through direct observation of an ecologically-designed garden under the guidance and tutelage of a qualified horticulturalist.
