Garden Buddies Monday Meetups

Do you know someone who loves to garden and would enjoy participating in shared gardening activities with a new friend?  This winter, we trained an eager new team of Garden Buddy mentors, and they can’t wait to get started gardening with seniors in the community! The Meet and Greet sessions offer an opportunity for seniors and mentors to connect in the Teaching Garden and do some fun and creative gardening activities. Pruning Workshop at Earthwise Agassiz | March 23, 10 am – 1 pm | Cost: $50 ($40 for members)

Join the Earthwise experts and learn the basics of pruning! This hands-on workshop will discuss proper pruning practices for trees and shrubs, with a strong focus on fruit trees. You’ll learn tree anatomy and how and why to prune. We’ll also explore pruning tools and how to maintain them. Bring your pruning tools along so we can sharpen and maintain them together!

Join us for this fun social evening! Enjoy some great conversation and learn more about Earthwise Society’s many programs and the impact we have on our community. Natural Tie Dye Workshop in the Earthwise Garden  | COST: $20 / $5 for Earthwise Members CANCELLED

Join fiber artist Gail Csiszar  for an enchanting natural tie-dye workshop in the Earthwise Garden. In this immersive experience, you’ll learn the art of crafting stunning botanical textile bundles using hand-picked flowers from our garden. Watch as our instructor unveils some stunning pre-made bundles while explaining the artistic process. To truly personalize your creation, bring along a plain t-shirt and wander through our lush garden to select your preferred flowers and plants. Then, you’ll have the chance to create your own eco bundle to take home where you will finish the magical process of creating beautiful botanical textiles!

Earthwise Annual Heirloom Tomato Fest | Sept 16 | 10 am- 2 pm

This popular homegrown community event is back! Join us in the Garden as we celebrate the diversity and beauty of the not-so-humble tomato. Choose from a wide array of unique heritage tomato varieties, and peruse our selection of certified organic Earthwise produce.  This year, the Tomato Fest will feature a cooking demo from Ladner-based Las Catrinas, who will bring you a special taste of authentic Mexican cuisine!

This workshop will delve into the incredible world of bees. This workshop will lead participants on an interactive walk through the garden where they’ll learn all about bee biodiversity, how to identify different bee species, and how to select pollinator-friendly plants to create bee-friendly habitats at home.

Immerse yourself in the Earthwise Farm’s spectacular scenery while enjoying a gourmet chicken and ribs BBQ buffet feast, prepared by renowned local chef Jonathon Gee of Wild Forager Catering. This unique open-air dining experience will also showcase the very best of the Earthwise Farm’s certified organic summer harvest. You’ll have the opportunity to tour the site, meet the farmer, and discover where the food is grown. Small Space Food Gardening |Aug 6 | 11 am – 12 pm | Cost : $10 | FREE for members

Join us in the Earthwise Food Demonstration Garden to learn the basics of maximizing your garden space to produce abundant and nutritious vegetables and fruits, no matter the size of your garden! The session will explore how vegetables and fruits exploit different niches and how they can be combined to create an ongoing harvest. Topics such as interplanting, companion planting, crop succession, and square-foot gardening will also be discussed. Additionally, this workshop will explore basic ecological principles that will help keep your garden pest free, conserve water, and ensure your soils are fertile.

Lavender Weaving Workshop |  July 17 | 11 am- 12 pm | cost: FREE for members | $20 non-members

Visit the Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay learn how to craft woven wands from freshly harvested lavender! These beautiful, aromatic wands can be used as air fresheners in linen closets, drawers, rooms, cars, and more. This workshop will be led by the talented Earthwise volunteer, Shirley Townley-Smith. Shirley is a passionate gardener who loves creating flower arrangements and making use of all the gifts her garden brings. Space is limited!

June 26 |4 pm- 5 pm | Herbal Mosquito Repellent Workshop | Cost: $25 | members: $20 

Are you looking for a natural way to deter those sneaky summer pests? This workshop will feature some interactive gardening activities that will show you what to plant in your garden to repel mosquitoes, teach you how to make your own herbal mosquito repellent spray using essential oils, and a beeswax and plantain salve to soothe itchy mosquito bites. Participants will go home with a bottle of their own natural mosquito repellent spray and a small container of plantain salve.  All ages welcome!

Dinner Garden Kit Workshop Series | Cost: $30 per workshop
Earthwise is celebrating the wide world of veggies by introducing a new Dinner Garden Kit Workshop series that will show you how to grow classics from around the world.  Each session will focus on a signature dish from another culture, and we’ll take you from seed to plate with tips on growing, harvesting, and preparing. Discover unusual plants and culinary herbs that add unique flavours, and see how you can go from planting to dinner in as little as 6 weeks. You’ll receive a package of seeds and recipe cards, and will have an opportunity to purchase curated, ready to plant starter kits!

Earthwise Agassiz Earth Day Plant Sale and workshop | April 22, 11 am – 2:00 pm 

Earthwise Agassiz will be celebrating Earth Day with an Open House event focused on water conserving landscapes for the Miami Watershed. Join us for a native plant sale and learn some valuable tips on designing gardens that help conserve water at our hands-on rain garden workshop. The Earth Day plant sale will offer an interesting variety of native plants suitable for rain gardens that will inspire some colourful and beneficial home gardening. You’ll also have the chance to give back to the Earth by planting some native plants in our newly installed rain garden. We hope to see you there!

April 16-22 is volunteer week in Canada, a time to celebrate Canada’s millions of volunteers and thank them for the many ways in which they give back.  We thank our amazing volunteers for sharing your expertise, experience, and time with us. Springtime is also the perfect time to welcome NEW volunteers to our team!  If you are curious about getting involved at Earthwise, come to our Open House to learn more. You’ll get the chance to meet our friendly volunteers, learn about volunteer opportunities, and enjoy a tour of the beautiful garden. Then, we’ll enjoy some refreshments together!

Tree Tapping at Earthwise Agassiz featuring Foraging with You

Join Earthwise Society and experienced wild food forager Raeanna Layfield of Foraging With You for an unforgettable tasting and learning experience! Raeanna will lead you on a hands-on exploration of Earthwise Agassiz’ butternut walnut trees. Learn about tree identification, and discover which trees can be tapped and how to process sap into syrup. Tree safety and equipment sanitation will also be covered in this fascinating sugar foraging workshop.

Spring is around the corner and it’s the perfect time to start planning your dream garden! We’ll discuss seed selection, planting for pollinators, succession planting, and early spring gardening tasks, and we’ll share some ideas for fun seed varieties to grow this year- both edible and ornamental. We’ll also reflect on last year’s growing season and discuss some takeaways for the coming year. Everyone welcome!

Participants will create two of their own herbal oil infusions and discover ways to use them, including making a herbal beeswax salve. Visit the beautiful Earthwise Garden to learn all about our local pollinators and which plants you can grow this year to feed the bees! Each participant will create and take home a bright and bold pollinator planter that will be sure to welcome pollinators throughout the summer!

May 14 | 10 am- 2 pm | Wellness in the Garden Event | Earthwise Garden, Boundary Bay 

This family-friendly community event celebrated gardens and their impact on our well-being, our communities, and our environment. There were wellness workshops, chef demos, a plant sale and farm cart, and more! Leading up to the event, we ran a silent auction benefiting Earthwise Society featuring some amazing prizes from local sponsors!

May 16 | 10:30 am- 12 pm|  Garden Buddies Meet & Greet  | Earthwise Garden, Boundary Bay

Do you know a senior who loves to garden and would enjoy participating in shared gardening activities with a new friend?  This winter, we trained an eager new team of Garden Buddy mentors, and they can’t wait to get started gardening with seniors in the community! The Meet and Greet session will offer an introduction to our Garden Buddies Therapeutic Horticulture program, and seniors and mentors will participate in some fun and creative gardening activities. This will be followed by some refreshments in the garden and a chance to mingle! If you would like to register, please email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca

Come and see what’s in bloom now! Tour the garden and then create a fun spring bouquet. Brighten your home just in time for Easter, or give it to a special someone! Bring a container small container to hold your bouquet.

April 27 | 1 pm- 2 pm | Herbal Self-Care | Cost: $30
Take some time for yourself! Join us under the Gazebo as we make herbal linen spray, epsom bath salts, and a healing beeswax salve. Take them home and build them into your daily self-care practices, or share the love and give them as gifts. All participants will take home 2 sachets of herbal bath salts, 1 bottle of linen spray and a small container of herbal salve.

April 28 | 1 pm- 2 pm | Seed Starting| Cost: $10
It’s the most wonderful time of year for gardeners – the start of a new growing season and a chance to try new varieties and growing techniques! Join us for a hands-on workshop where we will discuss best practices for seed starting, plant some seeds to take home, make some seed envelopes and garden markers to label our seeds. Participants are invited to bring any extra seeds they have to share for an “informal seed swap” at the end of the workshop! Flower, vegetable and herb seeds will all be discussed.

April 30 | 1 pm- 2 pm | Dig into Spring| Cost: $10 or FREE for Registered Victory Gardeners
Learn more about getting your spring gardens started, and discover how your home garden can make a real difference in the community through our Don’t Mow Grow Victory Gardens program! You’ll learn how to prepare your soil for organic gardening, how to select seeds for early season crops, and how to start seeds. Attendees will take home some seed starts!

EARTHWISE AGASSIZ EARTH DAY PLANTING PARTY

Learn more about our Habitat stewardship initiatives at Earthwise Agassiz and help us give back to the Earth at our Earth Day Work Party! Join us at 10 am on April 22 for a guided tour of the beautiful property.  At 11 am we will gather in the farm house  for refreshments and conversation. Then we’ll head into the field  and work together to plant some native species along the river to help increase biodiversity and improve ecosystem health. AGASSIZ STEWARDSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM

This FREE 5-part training series on habitat stewardship continued throughout the month of March. Potential and returning Earthwise volunteers learned about Earthwise Agassiz’s ongoing Miami River habitat enhancement and restoration projects, and discovered how they can get directly involved in Earthwise Agassiz’s restoration initiatives by becoming part of a regular volunteer stewardship committee to take part in ongoing habitat conservation activities.

GARDEN BUDDIES MENTOR TRAINING PROGRAM

We trained new volunteers through a free 6-session webinar series. New volunteers learned all about Earthwise and the history of Garden Buddies, discovered the benefits of therapeutic horticulture and how it is used to promote health and well-being for people of all ages!

Victory Gardens 101: Grow and Give Back | Sat, March 5| 11 am- 12pm| 

From seed-saving, organic pest control and mulching to soil care, rain barrels and water-wise gardening, Earthwise Society’s garden and farm demonstrate the myriad of benefits to organic and sustainable gardening practices.  Participants learned more about how to utilize these practices in their gardens and support their community through Earthwise Society’s Victory Garden program.

Get Growing: Planning Your Dream Food Garden | Thurs, Feb 3 | 

Join the Earthwise team on Zoom for an informational webinar on planning your dream food garden this spring! Topics will include: seed starting (including when to plant and transplant certain crops), early spring crops that you can plant NOW, techniques for maximizing your growing space and working with different light conditions, soil care, and more. We will also discuss harvesting and share some favourite recipes, complete with nutritional info! As well, participants will learn how they can grow and give back with the Earthwise Society Victory Garden program!

Just in time for Valentines Day, this Zoom webinar is all about bold and beautiful flowers!  Learn which varieties to plant in our February climate (including edible flowers), get some tips on growing and caring for your flower garden, and discover how to differentiate between annual, biennial and perennial flowers. You will also get some inspiration for creating beautiful floral arrangements with materials from your home garden!
