Wildlife Awareness Programs

Wildlife Awareness at Earthwise

At Earthwise Society, we believe that all of us are responsible for  wildlife conservation and  habitat stewardship.  The South Delta region has a high level of biodiversity thanks to its wide variety of ecosystems and is home to a large number of native and at risk species.  Did you know that Earthwise Society runs several wildlife awareness programs that support habitat conservation and benefit species at risk? Our wildlife awareness programs strive to protect native and at risk species by creating habitat, and promoting public awareness to encourage individuals to become actively involved in stewardship projects that improve habitat for species at risk.  Our programs involve monitoring, maintenance, enhancement, and the protection of wildlife, all of which can result in tangible wildlife conservation benefits. Here are just a few of our active Wildlife awareness programs:

  • Earthwise Barn owls:  Barns are important nesting sites for many local wildlife species!  The Earthwise barn loft area has been home to a pair of breeding owls for the past seven years.  The pair and their multiple broods are carefully monitored in their nesting box by a team of dedicated Earthwise volunteers led by Dave Robinson and supported by wildlife biologist and expert, Sofi Hindmarch.
  • Barn swallows: Besides the barn owls,  the barns and other outbuildings at the Earthwise Garden provide safe nesting sites for breeding barn swallows, another endangered local species.
  • Rufous  and Anna’s hummingbirds can be seen at the Earthwise garden year round, attracted by flowers that bloom almost year round. Various hummingbird feeders around the site are much appreciated by hungry hummingbirds and keep them fed in the colder months.
  • Mason bees & other pollinators:    Did you know that Earthwise has condos in our garden?  They are mason bee houses,  and our wildlife fans can sponsor a condofor $20 per year.   The Earthwise Garden demonstrates how to plant to support healthy pollinator populations and encourages others to do the same through our Feed the Bees program.
  • Little Brown bats (bat box)

Other wildlife to observe at the Earthwise Garden includes:

  • Bald eagles and hawks
  • Finches (House, Pine Siskin, Cedar Waxwing, etc.)
  • Bug Mansion
  • Hibernaculum (Garter snakes)
  • Amphibian habitat (pond)
  • Coyotes (wildlife corridor/greenway)
